4 Signs Your Roof Needs Replaced

The last thing a homeowner thinks about is that some day he or she may need to replace the roof on the house. This is especially the case if the home was purchased new. Eventually, though, all roofs will need to be replaced.  When that time does come, you will likely want to search for a roofing contractor Raleigh NC. There are 4 signs to look for when deciding if you need a new roof.

1. Age

Asphalt roof shingles are made to last a long time. However, if your home is at least 20-years-old, it may be time to consider investing in a new home covering. Another sign that your roof is too old is shingles that are worn and tired-looking. Additionally, if you notice neighbors are replacing their roofing systems, it may be a good idea to do the same.

2. Poor Condition

Damaged, cracked and curled shingles could be another signal. Finding granules in the gutters is another indicator that your roof is deteriorating.

3. Moisture Issues

One indication that water is getting in is a sagging roof, typically the result of rotting boards due to water damage. Other signs of water issues are dark streaks and moss growing. Doing an inspection of the attic, if possible, could reveal light getting through and water stains, which likely means there are leaks.

4. Flashing Problems

There are a number of areas on a roof that need metal flashing, such as chimneys, vents, dormer walls and skylights. This provides protection from water getting into the house due to rain and other weather conditions. If the flashing is in poor condition, it’s likely there are leaks.

While replacing your roof is an expensive investment, waiting too long to do so could significantly increase home damage, as well as the costs when the job is done.
